Pop Will Eat Itself: Sample Sources

The sample is integral to house and hip hop, whether it's that snatch of a vocal or the bassline. Ever wondered where that familiar snatch of a song came from? Here's a hardly-comprehensive list of sample sources, slightly limited because for the most part I'm only listing songs for which I own both the original and the sample source. It's important, I think, to see the common roots of both house and hip hop in 70s music. Disco house samples extensively from disco, obviously, especially from the old Larry Levan / Paradise Garage favourites but really everything seems like fair game.

If you have any samples to suggest to me, please e-mail me. Thanks to all who've written in so far

(NB: This list excludes cover versions, or versions which are so obviously covers there's no real need to name them. It also excludes obvious bootlegs/battle records, although sometimes the distinction isn't that sharp.)
